Acute pulmonary embolism is a life threatening disease, which is the third leading cause of cardiovascular mortality in the US. Massive PE, in particular, carries a high mortality risk of 25-65%. Carefully screened patients with contraindication to systemic thrombolysis can benefit from catheter directed thrombectomy/thrombolysis in Interventional Radiology.
